He was known as Reb Yaakov Kovner, but actually lived most of his life in Vilna.

To YD Miller: If I'm not mistaken, Reb Yaakov Barit was in Vilna not Kovno.

YD, thank you so much… i am thrilled with your find! Was a magid (in those years) in place of a Rabbi? Does it mention anything on his stone about his livelihood?

On the base of the headstone (not pictured), it is engraved REV. JUDAH BARIT. If i remember correctly, there's another person with the title REV buried on his immediate right.

If you walk through that place, you'll find many Kevarim with the title Rav - i always wondered how you can tell whether they were and orthodox Rav or not.

In any case, i'd be thrilled if anyone has any more info on this Rav.

The tombstone has in interesting writing all-together, can someone explain the meanings of:
תחתיך איש אחר לא ידענו,
נצחך באהבתך .. לנו
צר לנו צר יגון שמענו
בלתך אב אחר לא מצאנו

pretty poor grammer.

In Kovne there was a famous Rabbi and Rosh yeshivah Rav Yaakov Barit (the Rabbi of Reb Velvel Margolis of NY, he mentions him countless times) I dont know if they are related.

There was another Barit, Beb Zevulun Lieb of Plungeon.
