I have been collecting information on the Rav for a number of years with the eventual goal of producing a Biography. He was a seminal figure in American Frumkeit. Here is the famous Moser portrait of the Rav: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yxWDFhPLktU/TWLaySnGNGI/AAAAAAAAAsc/LCynxRrNZNs/s1600/Illowy%2Bportrait.jpg

The painting was done toward the end of the Rav's life.

Search for Henry Mosler Illowy and you'll get a nice rendering of the Rav and his wife. Wonder if he actually wore a ring.

Scroll back up for a front view of his marker.
Reb Elya - I'm sure you know Henry was the Rabbis' son - perhaps you are referring to something else?

Kathryn, hi! Wow, what a small world after all!
Where about did his children, including you parents live - NYC? I'd appreciate if you can share any pictures you have of your illustrious grandfather or family.

Are there any original pictures where these were painted from?

I am Kathryn Wallach nee Illoway, a great-grand-daughter of the rabbi. His son Jacob Leib, ( Yakov Yehuda) Illoway had 3 children, Miriam Ruth Illoway who married Elward J. Phillips. They had no children. His son, Bernard Samuel Illoway married Lillian Ruth Jacobs and I am their only child. A son Saul died in infancy supposedly of diphtheria. Unfortunately, I believe that I am probably the only living Jewish descendant since neither Henry nor Nettie married. I am most interested in seeing that the his grave and his wife's grave are restored. I would be grateful if a new matzevah could be made . If I can be contacted off list, we could decide how payment for this ould be arranged. The small grave next to him is his grandson Saul.
To se some more information about my great grandfather, please see the link below.
http://www.jewish-history.com/Illoway/biography.html
This site also has a picture of the Rav.

My son Natan and I found these graves in June of 1993. Their condition was only fair then, and the cemetery was not well maintained.

If you have suggestions, and I would hate to see the matzevot totally ruined, please let me know.

Shabbat Shalom.

Thanks so much Asher for the photos.

On your question about the name "Gertrude" whther it is a Hbrew name, the answer of course is NO, this is of a German origin (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_(given_name) ) the question is if this was used as a given name in Yiddish as well.

I dont see this name mentioned in Bies Schmuel which is the most common refrence for Given Names (needed for writing a Get) I do see a similar name Gutreid (see http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=8084&st=&pgnum=72)

You are both welcome. I went back today and have a full picture of Nettie's kever, will upload later as i just got into office.

YD, Henry and Nettie are buried right next to each other… does that suggest that both were single? Their brother Yaakov is buried right next to his wife. From what I gather, Yaakov Leib had a son and a daughter, both married and buried in the same place - i have pictures of all and will also upload IY"H.

I stumbled upon today the kevarim of Rav Illowys' children buried in Beth Olam Cemetery (near Rav Kursheedt z''l's kever). 2 sons and i'm almost sure a daughter too (a 4th one who died in 1975 must have been a grandchild, i don't have a clear picture of his marker).

Baruch, How do upload here pictures within this post.

He was, as a side (I am assuming that you are not form the US) New Orleans and Cincinnati are on two different sides of the Country. New Orleans is in Louisiana and is down south near the Gulf of Mexico while Cincinnati, Ohio is up north near Michigan which boarders Canada.
