R’ Menachem Yehuda Greenwald was the son of Rav Yaakov Yechezkiyahu Greenwald, rav of Seredne. His father’s brother was Rav Amrom Greenwald, the father of the Arugas Habosem. Rav Yaakov Yechezkiyahu was niftar at ayoung age and R’ Menachem Yehuda was raised by his uncle Rav Sholom Adler, the next Rav of Seredne and the author of the seforim Rav Sholom on Torah and Moadim. His grandmother was Raizel Lichtenstein, the sister of Rav Hillel Mikalamaya.

Q. Is it known when and why he immigrated to the U.S.?

I believe that it was in the 1890s. His children were very involved in Kollel Shomre Hachomos in the early American years.

Joe,
Any additional information on “his children”?

I believe that he had 6 children. His oldest son R’ Abe Greenwald Z”L was counsel to Kollel Shomrei Hachomos and his grandson Mr. Manny Greenwald, still serves in that position today. Another grandson Rabbi Eli Greenwald is a Rov in Manhattan Beach, NY. His Great-Grandson Rabbi Shaya Greenwald serves as Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivas Yishrei Lev in Telshe Stone, Israel. His youngest daughter Esther Z”L worked for the Kollel as well and her husband was the kollel’s accountant, a position currently served by a grandson as well. Another granddaughter, Alice Greenwald is the curator of the 9/11 museum currently being built in downtown Manhattan.
