Chief Rabbi of Montreal
d. 27 Teves, 1998
Rav Hirschsprung, a student of Rebbe Meir Shapiro served as the Chief Rabbi of Montreal from 1969 until his passing. The Lubliner once said that already as a youth he knew 2,200 talmudic folios by heart. The Rav also shared a very close relationship with the Lubavitcher Rebbe and served as one of the Rosh Yeshivas at Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim of Montreal.

As a student in 770 we had his number next to the phone in our dorm. When anyone had a question of where to find a Gemarah (ANY Gemara!) we would call him. WIthout even saying hello or waisting time he took our question answered to the exact line within page/volume etc. and hung up. I personally got Amreh M’komos by the dozen like this! He was from those unique individuals with the books of Torah!

Rav Hirshprung ztzl had a photographic memory but was also a gaon in pilpul. There wasn’t a part of Torah that he didn’t know. He was the founding force in the establishment of a Bais Yakov in Montreal.
