Baruch,
Do you have a close-up of the script? what was the name of his father?
my great grandfather was jacob hurwitz i know not much about him other than he was alive in 1922 . He was a Rabbi as far as I was told his daughter rebbecca was my grandmother .I am not certain if this is the same one ,but am searching to find my roots .
I have long searched for any information of this Rabbi Hurwitz, given that the information above is all correct, with no luck.
I don find that in 1969 a Sefer was published in NY by Menachem Mendel Kaufman named “Chidushie V’kisvie HuRa”i Hurwitz” from the auther Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Hurwitz.
I could nnot locate an online version of this Sefer, and the only Library where I find through the World Cat program is the AMERICAN JEWISH UNIVERSITY in Los Angeles CA.

Perhaps if you locate the Sefer we can learn more about this Rabbi.

Says there that he was a Kohen.
From which town did he came originally?
In HaPardes (Tishrei 5690) there is letter to the editor (הערות בדברי תורה) from a Rabbi Yaakov Yosef HaKohen Horowitz from Pittsburgh: http://hebrewbooks.org//pdfpager.aspx?req=23564&pgnum=32
Searching “הכהן הורוויטץ” on HebrewBooks brings up many similar results from the 20’s.
Could this be the same Rov?

Hi Craig and Carol,
Would any of you know if RJJ Hurwitz had a daughter who married to Rabbi Meyer Osher Greenberg of Roxbury, MA?
I found another set of his published works here

perhaps someone could read through it and get some info
Rabbi Jacob Joseph Hurvitz was my great grandfather. I am the grand daughter of his youngest daughter Anne. She was the youngest of 10, i can list them all if you need. His wife was named Maria Rose, however only referred to as Miriam Raezel, as I am named for her directly. Jacob Joseph was born 1870 Lublin Poland. The original family name was Kaplan, however in order to escape induction into the russian army they purchased last names in order to escape and be allowed to emigrate. Jacob took the name Hurvitz, his brother Morris took the name Shapiro, their fathers name was Samuel Elihu Kaplan.
Also, my son is named for him, Jacob Joseph..directly
My husband , Barry Kaufman is the grandson of Rabbi Yakov Yosef Hurvitz and we live in Denver, Colorado. His mother , Mary (Nechama Kaufman) was Yakov Yosef Hurvitz’s daughter and lived in Charlton , Mass. and later in Worcester, Mass.
She was married to Morris Kaufman and they had 5 children, Bette Kaufman Miles, Maxwell Oliver Kaufman, Mendel Kaufman, Isadore Bernard Kaufman( Barry Kaufman ) and Polly Kaufman Miller. Barry has two sons and one is named after his grandfather Yakov Yosef and the other son is named after his other grandfather Paltiel Kaufman.
Nechama Kaufman, the Rabbi’s daughter always had her fathers picture near by. She came to live with us in Columbus ,Ohio for a few years and always admired his photo. We have several copies of the books that we purchased of Yakov Yosefs writings and the money went to Kfar Chabad in Israel. We have donated several copies to Yeshivas and some Rabbi’s home libraries. Barry ,my husband remembers sitting on his Zaidys lap and asking him as a small child why he had so many books. He has fond memories of his Zaidy.
Rabbi Jacob Hurvitz was my great grandfather too. My grandmother, Rebecca Hurvitz, was his daughter. Herbie was my dad. We were raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and then I relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1985. Would love to see photos and learn more about The Rabbi and his family, hence, my family. Please keep in touch. Thank you,
Erin.
Rabbi Hurvitz married my grandparents in 1916. I would like to see his records of that ceremony and others he may have done for my family. Please write me. Thanks.
Heather
I found the sefer by Rabbi Hurvitz. I live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. If any of his relatives are interested please contact me.
Be well
The sforim used to be very easy to find (there are 2 volumes). While there are several tshuvos at the end of the first volume, Rav Hurwitz was consulted by rabbonim on many important issues and those tshuvos are not printed in either volume. Has anyone seen them printed anywhere else?
I’m the youngest grandchild of Rabbi Jacob Joseph Hurvitz. My dad was his youngest son Osher. I live in Los Angeles and thought it would be nice to try and contact some of my cousins. I’m in contact with my Los Angeles cousins whose father was Rabbi Nathan Hurvitz.
Also see R. Hurwitz’s listing here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/180364553/yaakov-yosef-hurwitz
Rav Yaakov Yosef Hurwitz was a member of the presidium at the joint convention of the Degel HaRabbanim and the Knesses HaRabbanim in Mount Freedom, NJ on June 18-19 of 1928.
Over 30 years ago, Rabbi Mayer S. Abramowitz published a group photo from that event that he snapped from an original that was in the possession of Rabbi Hurwitz’s grandson, the Mendel (Milton) Kaufman who was mentioned above.
Are any Hurwitz or Kaufman descendants out there still in posession of that photo? If yes, please contact me at eskolskyinfo@yahoo.com as it would be great if it could be scanned or digitized to create a high-resolution image of the original photo. This would make it much easier to identify the rabbis that were present.
R. Abramowitz’s copy appears on page 81 of his Chachmei Yisroel of New England (1991) that can be viewed here:
https://openlibrary.org/works/OL15135613W/Chachmei_Yisroel_of_New_England
I have made available a number of pictures, articles and files pertaining to that convention at the following Google Drive link and hope to add more content in the future:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14EKlwhRFi5wnsNypR3BC02sCa-GPN5PV?usp=sharing
In order to begin the effort of identifying the rabbis in that picture, I created a version that is numbered:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KhytGHzJNCARyWO09PQwpNl_m2_gRINN/view?usp=drive_link
With an associated index document that contains names of rabbis to match with the numbers in the above image:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tnWpn8bHNkW9q-dmqctV_VjyBhwNu2PePVyQSd2um14/edit?usp=drive_link
Some of the guesses were done with the help of photos from various rabbinic biography books such as Toldos Anshei Shem (1950).
Rabbi Hurwitz has been identified near the center of the photo and is marked with the number 3.
