Thanks to Rabbi Nechunya a colleague at Moreshes Chachmei America, it was discovered that Rabbi Fines original name was actually ‘Faivusovitch’,

Originally formed by men who had come to Portland from the same part of Eastern Europe, Shaarie Torah grew steadily as more Jewish immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe arrived in Portland. Initially, the congregation engaged rabbis and cantors on a short-term basis, but in 1916 they brought Rabbi Joseph Faivusovitch to Portland in a permanent position. He soon changed his name to Fain, because his daughter disliked writing her long surname on school papers.

Does Rabbi Fain have any descendants?
Hi Shalom, I’m originally from Portland (now in Chicago) and very interested in genealogy – I actually own the sefer with the stamp posted above (HaMedrash v’he’Maaseh al HaTorah by Rav Yechezkel Libschutz of Kalish).
Unfortunately, like many Jews of the time, his family didn’t maintain a connection to frumkeit – I believe his son died young while a student at Columbia University – I’d heard he was studying to be a rabbi (not sure if Conservative or Reform). I’ve met descendants of his who unfortunately didn’t understand who he was.
My friend’s grandfather, Rabbi Joseph Karasick, whose grandfather Rabbi Gershon Katzman was the Rav of San Francisco, told me that Rabbi Fain was known as the mumcheh in Gittin on the West Coast.
By the way – the name is not Fein – but pronounced Fayn.
He was also the Rav HaMachshir for Manischewitz’s flour mills in Tacoma and Spokane, WA.
Dear A Rosenberg
Thank you. Do you know if any of his descendants have his writings?
