He was born in Slovakia and there he married the daughter of Rav Yitzchok Schweiger, rosh yeshiva and dayan for some 50 years in Topolcany, a talmid of the Ksav Sofer. Rav Weiss became a noted chazzan in Germany, serving in the orthodox shul of Breslau. He raised 5 children. 2 of his sons went to Mir, becoming talmidim of Reb Yerucham Levovits. Rav Yitzchok Zev became rav of Basel, Switzerland while Rav Shamshon Raphael became a noted askan as head of the Young Israel and the OU. Chazzan Weiss was able to immigrate to Canada in 1939, becaming a chazzan in Ottawa. After moving to the United States, he was offered a job in the New York Opera, which he turned down due to shemiras shabbos concerns. A number of years before his death he suffered a stroke and was forced to retire from chazzanus. He retired to Lakewood, spending his final years learning in Rav Ahron’ Kotler’s then fledgeling yeshiva.
