Rabbi Lerner was born in Leordina on 18 Tammuz 5653 / 1893. His father, Yitzchak Menachem was a Sigheter chassid. Beginning at age 14, Chaim Aryeh studied in yeshivot in Debrecen, Somcuta Mare, Pressburg, and Sighet. In that last town, he became close to the Sigheter Rebbe, Harav Chaim Zvi Teitelbaum, and to his son, Harav Moshe, the future Satmar Rebbe. (The Satmar Rebbe told the author of this family history in a letter that he has a Sefer Torah given to him by Chaim Aryeh.)
In 1919, Freida GANCZ. They first lived in her hometown Polyen-Ruscova, then Leordina, and finally, they settled in New York in 1929.
When Chaim Aryeh and Frada lived in Polyen-Ruscova after their marriage, Chaim Aryeh became close to the rabbi of that town, Harav David Sperber.
In New York, Chaim Aryeh served as rabbi of various congregations including Spinker Chevra Ohev Tzeddek, Kossover Chevra Rabbeinu Moshe Hager, and Bais Medrash Edus L’Yisroel–Anshei Mezeritch. His longest-held position was as rabbi of Chevra Bnei Yosef Degel Machaneh Ephraim. He also was the mashgiach / kashruth supervisor at Beth Israel Hospital in New York. He published Imrei Chaim, Vol. I (1958) and Vol. II (1972), and is quoted in a number of other works including Kol Bo L’aveilut. He also is mentioned in various works on Hungarian Jewish history such as Chachmei Transylvania, in which a full biography appears (p.148). After Frada’s passing, Chaim Aryeh married Raizel Zoldan, who was born in Chust. Chaim Aryeh died on 6 Tevet 5738 / 1977.
