LITHUANIA TO BROOKLYN (2002) NEW BOOK tells of the life of Rabbi Daniel Shapiro growing up in Svintzyani Lithuania, coming to New York 1892, settling in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg where he founded and Presided over Vaad Harabonim, and found three Brooklyn schools perpetuating Orthodox learning. Rav Shapiro rabbinated at the Stockton Talmud Torah located at 141 Stockton Street in Brooklyn.
Doing genealogy, I came across a ship manifest dated 23 Nov 1906 showing a Chatzsel Sagnojew who stated he was going to his brother Rabbi Daniel Shapiro in Brooklyn. Chatzsel is later naturalized using the name Abraham Shapiro. When Chatzel filed his Declaration, he states he too, is a rabbi, but later on his naturalization petition, he states he is a student. Is this the Rabbi Daniel that Chatzel Sagnojew claimed as his brother?Chatzel/Abraham papers say he was born in Sweletziano Russia….

I discuss Rabbi Abraham Shapiro , in my book He was a half brother of Rabbi Daniel Shapiro Abraaham came to New York already a learned rabbi . Yeshiva College (tk?) brought him to USA to teach American born students who might benefit from education Abraham had been heir to in Lithuania The student part of Abrahams life was his ongoing quest for secular learning that led him too organize a resistance against Yeshiva College How interesting to have his name as you cite it.
Ms. Korzenik, I haven’t read your book yet – on order. My great-grandfather was Yitzchak (Joseph) Shapiro (1874-1937). Baruch and Daniel were his brothers. We were told he was a rabbi in Vilno but he didn’t have a congregation here, was a butcher and grocer in Brooklyn. We think he and his wife arrived in NYC before 1898. We know his father was Zalman Mordechai Shapiro but not his mother’s name. We look forward to learning more from your book about this family.
