Biographical Notes:
« Previous: Rabbi Yehuda Leib KaganNext: Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Berger »
Rabbi Gruber founded the Jewish farm-village of Gruber, near Winnipegosis, Manitoba in the late 1890s . This predates the establishment of Bender Hamlet in the Interlake region. Gruber was born in Russia.
Gruber, Manitoba c.1900 – 1905 A few settlers reported their home burned down in Gruber District and they had to relocate. My paternal family, (Sliworsky) were some of these settlers. (They were not Jewish)
Question 1 Why did this rash of “fires” occur?
Question 2 There is uncertainty about the exact location of Gurber,
Manitoba ( ie…. Gurber Post Office) was located?
.
I am Rabbi Eliezer Gruber’s great great great grandson. In regards to place called Gruber I used to have an old map of manitoba that had Gruber listed on it. I want to know why the historical society of Manitoba makes the claim that the Bender Hamlet was the first Jewish farm? I have a letter written on letterhead in Yiddish from my R. Eliezer Gruber to his wife in Europe about how hard it was farming the land there. It has a little picture of a farmhouse on the letterhead. I visited his kever last year and it is in very bad shape. A window was broken and there was some antisemetic graffiti on it. Very sad.
