Rav Maimon writes in the sixth volume of Sarei Hameiah that the name Reines comes from an ancestor whose (Yiddish) name was Reina, and her son was called “Reina’s”, as was common in those days when family names were not really used. Similarly, there was a noted Chasidic leader called Reb Leib Sarah’s, as his mother’s name was Sarah.
His father also resided in the US, he was a SIL of Reb Moshe Shmiel Horowitz, he mentions him in the preface to his sefer Yedai Moshe http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=1021&st=&pgnum=7&hilite=
His grandfather Harav Yitzchak Yaakov Reines Z”T”L
was the founder of the Mizrachi Movement.
