I know an older man, a Greek Jew, may he be well, לאורך ימים ושנים טובות, from the ancient Greek Jewish (Romaniote, e.g. from Janina, not Sepharadic) community, who grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where there was (and still is) a Greek Romaniote Shul, Kehila Kedosha Janina. He and his brothers, went to yeshiva on the LES then due to the השפעה of Rav Dvorzetz z”l, he told me. Although they came from a different edah and a different background, Rav Dvorzetz was able to prevail upon their father to send them to yeshiva, thereby saving them for Yiddishkeit.
As the matzeivah references, ולקח נפשות חכם – משלי יא:ל.
