There is a Chelka for a Otynier Society in Beth Moses Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.

I would assume Rabbi Naftali Gutstein is buried there.

“a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov”

    Based upon ?

  • 10 Geni // May 18, 2012 at 12:58 am

    Cheskel,

If you look at the wiki of Morris Ahron Gutstein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Gutstein) son of Rabbi Naftali Gutstein, it says that Morris was a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov through his “mother” !

He was a scion of a rabbinical family, descended “maternally” from a long line of renowned rabbis, including Rabbi Yisroel ben Eliezer (The Baal Shem Tov), the founder of Hasidic Judaism, and Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaqi), the famous Biblical exegete.

“On his father’s side” he is descended from a line of Sephardi rabbis with origins dating from the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain.

It should say his “wife” was a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov.

    Becky,

Are the Gutstein’s from Chicago Orthodox?

  • 14 NBH // Oct 11, 2012 at 3:15 pm

anyone has more info on the yichus to the Baal Shem Tov?

  • 15 Daniel // Dec 18, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Some of the Chicago Gutsteins are orthodox, some not as much, but all still proudly Jewish with great memories of our grandfather, Rabbi Morris Aaron Gutstein. In a volume of the Karnei Re’em that my grandfather published, he listed the geneology in appendices in the back. Additionally, My father, Solomon Gutstein, and grandfather, published a book about the stained glass windows at Shaarei Tikvah Synagogue, with the geneology delineated in the appendices.
