I am a great-granddaughter of Rav Avrahom Yosef Yoska Heller-Gottesman. My grandfather, Rav Avraham Binyamin Beinish Auerbach, zt”l, is buried in the Floral Park Cemetery in Deans, NJ, as is his Rebbetzin, Devorah, a”h, the oldest daughter of Rav Gottesman. Rav Gottesman was ben-acher-ben of the Tosfos Yom Tov. He left many, many descendants, shomrei Torah u’mitzvos and marbitzei Torah. Rav Gottesman’s Rebbetzin, my great-grandmother Faigie, a”h, was a direct descendant of the Baal Shem Tov. She is buried across from her husband in Beth David Cemetery.

    October 21, 1929

One American student of the ill-fated Hebron Yeshivah, which was the scene of the most brutal massacre during the recent outbreak when more than 40 students were killed, including 8 Americans, was ordained by Chief Rabbi, Dr. A. J. Kook.

The student to receive “S’micha” was Zevi Gottesman, who came to the Hebron institution from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Yeshivah in New York. He is the son of Rabbi Abraham Joseph Gottesman of Brooklyn. Zevi Gottesman happened to be away from Hebron on the fatal day of the massacre.

One of the American students who was killed, William Berman, of Philadelphia, was to have been a candidate for ordination

I have fond memories of a Rabbi Gottesman when I was a boy in Jersey City. His name may have been Walter.
It was so long ago…..the early 1960’s.
The synagogue was right next to our apartment building on Grant Avenue. Us kids referred to him as ‘Mr. Rabbi’, and he was a genuinely nice man. He never raised his voice no matter how noisy we were.
He had 2 sons (‘Pinny’ & ‘Iggy’) and a daughter (‘Feygele’…..though her name may have been Florence.) She loved The Beatles, especially George. My brothers and I have many fond memories of Mr. Rabbi and his family. If anyone knows this family I would love to know how they’re doing. They always welcomed us into their homes. A truly nice family.
