He was in Chevron by the pogrom in 1929. There is a whole story with him, how they thought he will die, and put him in the room with the dead, but he pulled through.
The whole Yeshiva was killed. He hid in a garbage can as did my cousin R’ Avrohom Shimon Gefen.
They were left for dead. Very few people survived. They were tremendous Talmidei Chachomim. I remember when he was niftar. I remember his wife Shoshana Tabenkin very fondly as she was my mothers dear friend
This Rabbi Tabenkin was born in 1897 which means that by 1929 he was already 32 years old, are you therefore sure that he’s the one that was by the Chevron pogrom?
Rabbi Tabenkin was my uncle – he was married to may father’s sister (referenced above, Shoshana Tabenkin)
I remember him only from the eyes of a child but he had the warmest, kindest demeanour. A truly soft spoken and lovely human being.
And yes – although I only heard my aunt speak of it – he was at the Yeshiva – I even have his record from the Yeshiva in my possession.
