August 25th, 2009 · 7 Comments

Chief Rabbi of Providence, R.I.
d. 7 Sivan, 1926 (5686)
The Rav was born in 1874 in a suburb of Harodna (Grodna, Belarus) to a family of rabbinic descent. After initially studding under his father who also served as the local Rav he went on to study in the yeshivos of Eishistok, Volozhin, and Slabodka. Rav Rubenstein considered Rav Yitzchak Blazer (Reb Itzele Peterburger) his primary teacher. The Rav was ordained by Rav Yaakov Tzvi Shapiro and Rav Yitzchak Yaacov Reines of Saukenai, Lithuania. Arriving in New York in 1903 the Rav was appointed Moreh Dasrah of Congregation Chai Adam Anshei Minsk before relocating to Providence, RI.

In Eishishok there was no yeshiva, there was a famous “Kolel Prushim”. The Chofetz Chaim learned there in his youth, and so did many other gedolim. if I’m not mistaken, Reb Chaim Ozer also learned there in his early youth.

Seems he was one of the contributors to “Otzar Yisroel”. See here (toward the bottom of the first column): http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=2593&st=&pgnum=6&hilite=
