I see on Geni that he had brothers; Avrohom Hersh and Shoul Leib Friedman, maybe this opens another avenue of research.
his brother avrohom hersh was the sanzer rosh hayeshiva , shaul leib was a business man but maybe was a greater lamden than both his brothers he would learn day and nite hardly sleeping and doing business only what was necessary

By chance I found the oficial stamp of your Grandfather in a Sefer uploaded on http://www.hebrewbooks.org the original copy of the sefer Igeres Tzafon can be found in the Chabad Library in Crown Hights, Brooklyn NY.

My name is sari, my fathers mother, Sarah, was r chaim alter friedman’s daughter. She was married to Banjamin greenfield. She was killed in a car crash in the 1930’s
We just visited the cemeteries on Monday. Sari, is your father still alive? He and my mother – Marilyn Friedman – were first cousins. My mom told me that her aunt was killed in a car crash. My grandfather, Immanuel (Menachem Mendel) was R Chaim Alter Friedman’s son. So, we’re second cousins. We visit the cemetery on Labor Day. Is there any chance we can get a group of relatives together?

Jonathan, we would love a chaim alter treasure trove. I am a great granddaughter. My mother, Marilyn (Friedman) Sindler was the daughter of his son, Menachem Mendel (Emmanuel) Friedman. My mom was also a cousin of Anita Friedman. My aunt, Pearl Friedman, talked about the times she stayed at her aunt’s house, Nettie Liebowitz, after my mom was born. can we all ge together on Labor Day when we visit the cemetery?

Jay, we visit the cemetery every Labor Day, so we put a stone on your grandmother’s headstone. Nettie and my grandfather were brother and sister. So you are a second cousin of mine and my sister Charyse’s.

I am a great granddaughter of Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman. My mother was the daughter of Sarah Friedman Greenfield who was the Rabbi’s daughter. My nephew, William Cohen wrote earlier on this blog. He is the son of my sister, Suzan Cohen, so he is the great-great grandson of Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman. My mother had great love for her grandfather and spoke of him often. She also spoke of his connection to Yeshiva University. Does anyone have more information about that?
Hello so many cousins! I’m another family member (living in France) but born in Brooklyn. My mother, Sarah Frances Leibowitz, was the eldest daughter of Nettie Friedman (Reb Chaim Alter’s and his wife Malka’s daughter) and Samuel Leibowitz. I am named after Malka. When I worked in the Lower East Side in 1969 – 1970 for Mayor Lindsey I met people who still remembered Chaim Alter and had attended his synagogue (I believe it was on Avenue D). I remember my great-aunts Rose and Susan and Annie very well, and my cousin Adeline! Jay Bernfeld is my first cousin. My sister Elaine Goldberg lives in Arizona, with 3 children and 6 grand-children who are there and in California. He had a dairy shop (I think on Bristol Street) and my mother always spoke about how Chaim Alter kept his payes behind his ears, and walked tall even when some kids threw stones at him in the Catskills. Also that when he died, thousands attended his funeral procession in the Manhattan streets and that the photo was on the front page of the NY Daily News. There is a copy of his Ellis Island entry document from the 1890s stating his former allegiances as the Emperor of Austria and the King of Hungary (and maybe it was Jonathon who had sent it to my mom – I loved Jonathon’s grandfather – my uncle Leo). I’m happy to meetall of you!

Wow this is amazing to see. I just happened to google Rav Chaim Alter Friedman while I was visiting two of his granddaughters, Lillian Shulman and Villian Sherman- they are the daughters of Sara Friedman Greenfield (daughter of Malka and Chaim Alter Friedman.) I was also visiting today with Chaim Alter Friedman’s great granddaughter Sura Schreiber Katz. I am Chaim Alter Friedman’s great- great grand daughter. My great grandmother Sara was Chaim Alter’s daughter. And my grandmother Harriet Hinda Greenfield Schreiber was Sara’s oldest daughter.

Hello Friedmans. Let me introduce myself as I’m not a Friedman, but a SINGER. Malke SINGER FRIEDMAN was my great-great grandfather’s sister. Malke’s father was Mendel SINGER (or ZINGER), who was associated with the synagogue in Sztropko – I don’t know if he was a rabbi or worked for the rabbis, but his name is on every record for birth, marriage and death for Sztropko from 1851 until his own death in 1883. Chaim Alter and Malke were married there in 1884.
I visited the LES looking for the places where so many of my ancestors lived. I had a few possible addresses where the FRIEDMANs lived, but mostly the buildings are newer. I don’t know why I didn’t find this site in my search before I went.
Chaim officiated at my grandparents’ wedding in 1924. At the time, his address was 69 St. Marks.

To H…. My great-grandmother was Rose, A’H. I’m named after her. there is a lot of information on here that isn’t quite right as per my grandmother’s recollection. I see that someone put on Geni that my great-grandmother died in Germany when she was never in Germany, so….. Misinformation is not a great thing.
Hi – I recently started researching my family history and unexpectedly found this site. First an introduction. I believe Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman was my great grandfather. My father was George Friedman, his father was Louis Friedman, and his father was Chaim Alter Friedman. I recognized many of the names in these postings from my research, but the postings made them more than just names on a tree – thanks. I’m gathering this info to hopefully pass it along to the next generation. The interest from nephews and nieces has been great.
Now my first question. Any information on Chaim Alter Friedman’s parents. What I found was Usher (or Asher) Lemel Friedman and Hinda Menachem. I also found that Usher was married to Eszter Burger. Any info (or pix) that confirms (or denies) would be great. Keep posting. It is being read.
Hi everyone. I don’t know info about Chaim Alter’s parents, but I will ask cousin Harold Liebowitz (he was my mom Marilyn Friedman’s first cousin). I will see if he has any info. Also, Louis is one of the sons of Chaim Alter who is buried near Chaim Alter (so is my grandfather Emmanuel Friedman). We visit the cemetery every year. This year, we are visiting the weekend of September 15.

Hi folks! I’m Burt Shulman; my mother is Lillian (Greenfield) Shulman, Ben Greenfield’s daughter and Chaim Alter Friedman’s granddaughter. My mom is 94 and still going, as is her sister Vivian (Dolly). I’m Rivka Nelson’s first cousin (we’ve been close from the beginning, along with many of our other first cousins). My mom has told stories forever about Chaim Alter, loved him a great deal, and remembered (as several others here have) that his funeral was covered by New York newspapers; she believes Mayor Jimmie Walker attended. I’d love to see the Rabbi’s writings, if anyone has them. Nice to meet you all.
