A Dvar Torah from him http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=2751&st=&pgnum=102&hilite=
I see on Geni that he had brothers; Avrohom Hersh and Shoul Leib Friedman, maybe this opens another avenue of research.
his brother avrohom hersh was the sanzer rosh hayeshiva , shaul leib was a business man but maybe was a greater lamden than both his brothers he would learn day and nite hardly sleeping and doing business only what was necessary
to zvi and farshlufen it meant his wife the mother of his children the children put up the matzeva
BP, ‘where did yo get this info that rav Avraham Hersh Friedman from Sanz was his brother?
Their was also a Avraham Hersh Freidman in NY in 5786, see in ים של יהודה.
Sanzer Rosh Yeshiva in Polnad or here in the US?
I am one of his great-great grandchildren!
the photo posted by the admin is a photo of my maternal grandmother’s grandfather, a’h & I’m looking to find out more about him as I’m a History major interested in my family geneology and geneology in general.

Ariel, can you tell me more information about your maternal grandmother? She and my mother would have been first cousins. What was her maiden name? YD Miller, do you know how the sefer came to be located at the Chabad library?
Trisha, Who is your mother?
Ariel, my mother’s maiden name was Marilyn Friedman. Her father was Menachem Mendel Friedman, who was one of the sons of Chaim Alter Friedman. What was your mother’s name and who were her parents?
My name is sari, my fathers mother, Sarah, was r chaim alter friedman’s daughter. She was married to Banjamin greenfield. She was killed in a car crash in the 1930’s
We just visited the cemeteries on Monday. Sari, is your father still alive? He and my mother – Marilyn Friedman – were first cousins. My mom told me that her aunt was killed in a car crash. My grandfather, Immanuel (Menachem Mendel) was R Chaim Alter Friedman’s son. So, we’re second cousins. We visit the cemetery on Labor Day. Is there any chance we can get a group of relatives together?
I am the grandaughter of Rav Chaim Alta Friedman and Malka My mother was Sarah Frances, their daughter….,
Sarah.married my father, Benjamin Greenfield….
and I do remember my Uncle Mendel….my mother Sarah’s brother…I am in close contact with Adeline, Aunt Rose’s daughter
My father lost his love, Sarah, in a horrible
auto accident ,,,,her children,my sisters and brothers lost our beautiful, loving young mother
Life was never the same…From your notes,. It appears we are related….!!!!
I’m trish’s sister. It looks like we’re all related and if so would like to meet you. so your mother, sara was my grandfather, mendel (emanuel)’s brother? My mom told me about once staying over a relative’s house that had a lot of children and the father of the house made breakfast for each of the kids; could that have been your father? also, do you know the name of chaim alter’s wife?
I have a Sefer MaHaRaM Shik Vol. 1 (1895 Munkacs) with the above mentioned stamp.
The address is clearly 325 E. 3rd St. New York:
It also has a stamp from Rabbi Mordechai Friedman of Mezritch son of Rabbi Yaakov.
How was Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman related to Rabbi Mordechai of Mezritch?
I’m pretty certain that this is my father’s family. His name was Philip (Pinchas) Friedman. My mother’s name Susan. If this seems likely email me at myovits@iupui.edu. Thanks.
anita, are you related to mara yovitz? if so, this is your man. if anyone of u cuzins would like a chaim alter treasure trove, let me know. i have a manuscript of his and a photo of his fathers grave on zborov too.

BP, ‘where did yo get this info that rav Avraham Hersh Friedman from Sanz was his brother”
Chaim Alter left his bro, avraham hirsch, the av beis din of sanz (in sanz), $100 in his will.
Jonathan, we would love a chaim alter treasure trove. I am a great granddaughter. My mother, Marilyn (Friedman) Sindler was the daughter of his son, Menachem Mendel (Emmanuel) Friedman. My mom was also a cousin of Anita Friedman. My aunt, Pearl Friedman, talked about the times she stayed at her aunt’s house, Nettie Liebowitz, after my mom was born. can we all ge together on Labor Day when we visit the cemetery?
I as well would love to see your library on Rabbi Chaim Alter, He was my great-great grandfather. I have a another picture of him also in the Catskills.
Anyone (family) want a copy of his will? A hand written collection of his writings!?
I would love a copy of his will.
So we are all related. I am Anita Friedman’s daughter, great-granddaughter of the rebbe.
Jonathan, you said you have a photo of his fathers grave on zborov? I don’t think I have that one. I’d love to have that too.
I would be interested in a copy of his will and of his writings. I would especially be interested in meeting my relatives. Where do you all live and when do you go to visit the cemetery? also, does anyone know where he was born and where his parents were born?
I am his great-granddaughter, Charyse. My grandfather was his son. Who are you?
Mara, what was your grandfather’s name? Charyse and I are sisters. Our grandfather was his son Emmanuel (Menachem Mendel). We are also great-granddaughters. BTW, does anyone know ho William Cohen is related?
Hello to all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nettie Leibowitz was my grandmother. We are planning a trip to Ellis Island. Does anyone have info about the various arrivals of our family?
Jay, we visit the cemetery every Labor Day, so we put a stone on your grandmother’s headstone. Nettie and my grandfather were brother and sister. So you are a second cousin of mine and my sister Charyse’s.
Jonathan might have information about family arrivals. He has tons of interesting documents and photos (thanks for sharing, Jonathan).
If any relatives want to meet on Labor Day, please let us know. We go in the morning, and have flights back home at 3:30 p.m. on Labor Day.
I am a great granddaughter of Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman. My mother was the daughter of Sarah Friedman Greenfield who was the Rabbi’s daughter. My nephew, William Cohen wrote earlier on this blog. He is the son of my sister, Suzan Cohen, so he is the great-great grandson of Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman. My mother had great love for her grandfather and spoke of him often. She also spoke of his connection to Yeshiva University. Does anyone have more information about that?
Hello so many cousins! I’m another family member (living in France) but born in Brooklyn. My mother, Sarah Frances Leibowitz, was the eldest daughter of Nettie Friedman (Reb Chaim Alter’s and his wife Malka’s daughter) and Samuel Leibowitz. I am named after Malka. When I worked in the Lower East Side in 1969 – 1970 for Mayor Lindsey I met people who still remembered Chaim Alter and had attended his synagogue (I believe it was on Avenue D). I remember my great-aunts Rose and Susan and Annie very well, and my cousin Adeline! Jay Bernfeld is my first cousin. My sister Elaine Goldberg lives in Arizona, with 3 children and 6 grand-children who are there and in California. He had a dairy shop (I think on Bristol Street) and my mother always spoke about how Chaim Alter kept his payes behind his ears, and walked tall even when some kids threw stones at him in the Catskills. Also that when he died, thousands attended his funeral procession in the Manhattan streets and that the photo was on the front page of the NY Daily News. There is a copy of his Ellis Island entry document from the 1890s stating his former allegiances as the Emperor of Austria and the King of Hungary (and maybe it was Jonathon who had sent it to my mom – I loved Jonathon’s grandfather – my uncle Leo). I’m happy to meetall of you!
Trisha, my mother (Aunt Sarah), was very close to your mom Marilyn. Whoops – I made a small error above – my great aunt Annie was on Samuel’s side, not Nettie’s.
Dear Charyse, so now you know that Chaim Alter’s wife was named Malka!
I am chaim alter’s great-granddaughter.my mother is adeline, whose mother was rose friedman bass. i am also named sarah malka
Wow this is amazing to see. I just happened to google Rav Chaim Alter Friedman while I was visiting two of his granddaughters, Lillian Shulman and Villian Sherman- they are the daughters of Sara Friedman Greenfield (daughter of Malka and Chaim Alter Friedman.) I was also visiting today with Chaim Alter Friedman’s great granddaughter Sura Schreiber Katz. I am Chaim Alter Friedman’s great- great grand daughter. My great grandmother Sara was Chaim Alter’s daughter. And my grandmother Harriet Hinda Greenfield Schreiber was Sara’s oldest daughter.
I would love as much information on my great great grandfather. Please email any info you have or point me in the right direction. My great aunts, Chaim alter’s granddaughter would love to collect whatever they can. I would also like the info for my family. My email is redcurls18@aol.com
ariel
was your grandmother’s name rose or sarah?
If so, I have more information for you.
Hello Friedmans. Let me introduce myself as I’m not a Friedman, but a SINGER. Malke SINGER FRIEDMAN was my great-great grandfather’s sister. Malke’s father was Mendel SINGER (or ZINGER), who was associated with the synagogue in Sztropko – I don’t know if he was a rabbi or worked for the rabbis, but his name is on every record for birth, marriage and death for Sztropko from 1851 until his own death in 1883. Chaim Alter and Malke were married there in 1884.
I visited the LES looking for the places where so many of my ancestors lived. I had a few possible addresses where the FRIEDMANs lived, but mostly the buildings are newer. I don’t know why I didn’t find this site in my search before I went.
Chaim officiated at my grandparents’ wedding in 1924. At the time, his address was 69 St. Marks.
I would love to hear from any of you. In fact, I have been trying to reach some of you via Ancestry.com’s terrible messaging system. I know I reached out to Sari, a Yovits, and probably others. Please email me at goldner_jeff@hotmail.com if you get a chance.
Hi everyone. Jeff, it looks like my grandfather, Menachem Mendel Friedman (Chaim Alter and Malka’s son) was named after Malka’s father.
Tamar, my mother Marilyn Friedman, was a first cousin of Lillian and Vivian.
Looks like I need to keep up with this group more often! There are quite a few of you that I don’t have in my tree. Trisha, you are a 3rd cousin, once removed as is Madeline. Shari, Tamar – I haven’t figured out our connections fully yet. goldner_jeff@hotmail.com
To H…. My great-grandmother was Rose, A’H. I’m named after her. there is a lot of information on here that isn’t quite right as per my grandmother’s recollection. I see that someone put on Geni that my great-grandmother died in Germany when she was never in Germany, so….. Misinformation is not a great thing.
Hi – I recently started researching my family history and unexpectedly found this site. First an introduction. I believe Rabbi Chaim Alter Friedman was my great grandfather. My father was George Friedman, his father was Louis Friedman, and his father was Chaim Alter Friedman. I recognized many of the names in these postings from my research, but the postings made them more than just names on a tree – thanks. I’m gathering this info to hopefully pass it along to the next generation. The interest from nephews and nieces has been great.
Now my first question. Any information on Chaim Alter Friedman’s parents. What I found was Usher (or Asher) Lemel Friedman and Hinda Menachem. I also found that Usher was married to Eszter Burger. Any info (or pix) that confirms (or denies) would be great. Keep posting. It is being read.
Hi everyone. I don’t know info about Chaim Alter’s parents, but I will ask cousin Harold Liebowitz (he was my mom Marilyn Friedman’s first cousin). I will see if he has any info. Also, Louis is one of the sons of Chaim Alter who is buried near Chaim Alter (so is my grandfather Emmanuel Friedman). We visit the cemetery every year. This year, we are visiting the weekend of September 15.
Gary and anyone else working on a family tree, could I please get a copy once you’ve finished?
Hi folks! I’m Burt Shulman; my mother is Lillian (Greenfield) Shulman, Ben Greenfield’s daughter and Chaim Alter Friedman’s granddaughter. My mom is 94 and still going, as is her sister Vivian (Dolly). I’m Rivka Nelson’s first cousin (we’ve been close from the beginning, along with many of our other first cousins). My mom has told stories forever about Chaim Alter, loved him a great deal, and remembered (as several others here have) that his funeral was covered by New York newspapers; she believes Mayor Jimmie Walker attended. I’d love to see the Rabbi’s writings, if anyone has them. Nice to meet you all.
I have a fairly extensive tree that I would love to corroborate and collaborate with you on. I have it at Ancestry but can share various reports. I know there are some errors – Harold was going to send me some more corrections. The more eyes the better and I know I don’t have everyone on this site included. Email me at goldner_jeff@hotmail.com if you want a copy. (Tante Malke SINGER FRIEDMAN was my great-great grandfather’s sister.)
Hi Burt. We are second cousins. My mother was Marilyn Friedman Sindler. Your mother was her first cousin. We visited the cemetery yesterday and put stones on all the headstones. Do you know of any cousins my daughter’s age (18)? She would love to meet new cousins! Great to meet everyone. I wonder how many descendants Chaim Alter has.
