   Was the Rebbes wife a kaufman from the Kaminke family? there was a Kaufman who immigrated in 1921 (about the same time as the Rebbe) and brought along a Sefer Torah from the Baal Shem Tov. I also found archived reports of someone David Twersky (the Rebbe had a son by the name), who inherited a Sefer Torah of the Baal Shem Tov from his grand father Kaufman who immigrated in 1921, donating it to a Shul in Israel.
   Can anyone put the pieces together here?

   The Machnovker Sefer Torah is something else, and this information aaw5952 is very interesting, I would want to hear more on that. benbeezee@gmail.com

   His Rebetzin was a Kaufman of Kaminka-Miropil.

   I don’t think his father went back to the USSR. His father did move from Philly to NYC because he didn’t like the Rochnius there.

   From Pittsburgh to Brownsville. The one who returned to Communist USSR was Reb Shlomo Benzion of Chernobyl.

    What made him (R’ Shlomo Bentzion) go back were his Chasidim he had left behind. He past away during WW2. There are still people in Kiev thet remember his Hakofos on Simchas Torah.
    He was also the one in charge of the Chernoble Kloiz in Tzfas, from letters preserved between him & his and Chasidim in EY, it is presumable that at one point he did want to leave for Eretz Yisroel.

    He had a few children. R’ Avrohom Dov of Rachmistrivka (son of R’ Nuchemche, immigrated to EY in 1926, past away approx 1950) actually had a son Yochanan who was married to his daughter. Have no idea what ever happened to him. would be happy to hear if anyone here knows.

    in reference to comment #11, the following is a letter from a Chasid in Zvehill to his Rebbe R’ Shlomo Bentzion begging him not to return to the USSR, you can understand from the letter, that he chose rather to suffer under the communists than to see Yidden transgress on Torah and Mitzvohs. The writer describes the terrible situation that became even worse from ever before and he warns Reb Shlomo Bentzion not to take the risk of returning;

    “כבוד אדמו”ר וידידי הר”ר ר’ שלמה בן ציון טווערסקי יחי’!
    פון דער ערשטער מינוט פון אייער אפ פארין מארצינו וממולדתינו שרייבט איהר אין יעדער מכתב לידידנו הישיש ה”ר ישעי’ אשר אז איהר ווילט קומען און איהר וועט קומען, ואני מצדי לא הרהבתי עוז בנפשי איך זאל אייך שרייבען בזה הענין דעתי ועצתי, והאמת! אז מיט 2 יאהר ציריק איז כמעט יעדער איינציגער מאחינו בני ישראל ישבו על כנם און מע האט נאך גיהאט כח גיין אנקיגען שטראם! נוכח המים הזדונים שרצונם להטביע השארית הפליטה בכל רגע, אבל בעת הזאת שנת תרפ”ח, הה ידידי אוי ואבוי לנו. בא דיא מענטשין בא דעם סארט מאחינו בני ישראל וואס מע ריפט זייא בא אונז סוחרים מוכרים בעלי חנות (בא אייך רופט מען דאס ביזנעס לייט) האט מע אין דיא 2 יאר אפ גישניטען דאס גאנצע חיות. מיר זאנין יעצט כחפצי הפקר שאין להם בעלים! קיין שום רחמנות איז ניטא אויף אונז. דער רוב יודען פון דעם קלאס גוועים ברעב.
    ידידי מו”ר עס קען גיוויס זיין אז איך האב קיין רעכט אייך ניט שרייבען המכתב הזה כי הוא נגד רצונכם. נאר לייענענדיג המכתבים שקבל ה”ר ישעי’ אשר וגם 1 דאלער ששלחתם, האב איך ניט גיהאט קיין כח המעצר און האב גימיזט שרייבען.
    איר שרייבט בהמכתב מיר זאלען מתפלל זיין אין אייך ארויס שלעפין ממצרים, און מיר שרייען ביום ובלילה רבש”ע הצילנו נא מיד אחי ער איז ערגער ווי מיד עשיו בעוד שנפשינו בנו. מיר בייטין באם בורא עולם תן לי נפש ווייל והרכוש קח לך איז שוין לאנג ניטא. מיר האבען שוין ניט מיט וואס צאלין דעם וויסטיגן מכס. עס איז שוין והבית רק. בא דעם רוב יודען האט מען שוין צו גינימען דיא כלי הבית, והכלבים צועקים הב! הב! האט מען זיך שוין גינימען צום נפש. כמה אלפים מאתנו יושבים במאסר בחנם בלא דבר.
    הה! הבט משמים וראה! עס איז דא אסארט יודען וואס זיי לעבט זיך ניט שלעכט, היינו וואס שטייען ביי דעם ראד בא דעם גלגל החוזר. נאר ידידי מו”ר! קען מען זיי רופען יודען? קענין מיר זיך גלאכען צו זייא? וואס זייא האבין שוין פון זיך אראפ גיווארפין דעם עול מלכות שמים און שרייען מי ד’ אשר אשמע בקולו?

    the rebbe did not go back straight fron us to russia he was first in germany in franfurth where he davend in the chasidcher kloisz then he went to his son in law rabbi N. Twersky the rov in kovla and from there he went back to russia he wrote lots of letters to the racmistrivka family

    Rav Shlomo Bentzion ZTL’s brother-in-law in buried in Beth David Cemetary in Elmont, NY, Rav Shlomo Shmuel Twersky Admur of Chernobyl. http://kevarim.vohost.us/?s=shlomo+shmuel+twersky. He has many great nephews and nieces living in America including the Rebbe of New Square and the Rebbe of Chernobyl Boro Park’s children and grandchildren.

    In response to #15, I find it pretty couriging of the Chasid to write this letter out of Russia being that every thing entering and leaving USSR was filtered.

    To number 3 – Rabbi Menachem Nuchem actually had 6 children, not 2. For more detailed and accurate biographical info see “The Unbroken Chain” by Neil Rosenstein.

    I happen to be a great- grandchild of Rav Menachem Nochum Twerskey. The Rebbe had a son Shmuel, who, is my grandmother’s father. Shmuel Twerskey was unfortunately not cut out for the difficult job of rebbesvitch. He had a difficult life.
