For more information on my grandfather, Rabbi Mnachem HaKohen, see the Wikipedia article, “Mnachem Risikoff.”

Also, if anyone knew him personally, or was a member of his congregation, and has information or stories you could share with me that are not already included in the Wikipedia article, I would be very grateful if you would contact me at

Two men holding Torah scrolls in corner of synagogue in Bedford Stuyvesant; sculptural relief of lions holding tablets of the law above doorway at top. Caption: “Rabbis rescue Torah: Ninety-year-old Senior Rabbi Mnachem Risikoff, right, and son, Rabbi Leon Risikoff, assemble scrolls of Torah to remove from their house of worship, Congregation Dibre Mnachem, at 691 Lafayette Ave., directly behind burning warehouse on Kosciusko St.”

When did Rabbi Leon Risikoff pass away?

From my discussions with his relatives, I remember that he passed away in 1969.

According to the Social Security Death Index, he passed away in May 1969 in the Washington, DC area in Maryland.

His Hebrew name was Yehuda Leib. I believe that he never had any children.

My father’s family was close with Rabbi Leon since my great-grandfather was related to Rabbi Mnachem Risikoff. Starting in the late 1930s, my grandparents rented an apartment from R. Leon and his wife in the building where the Risikoffs resided in Crown Heights.

Rabbi Leon was מסדר קידושין for my aunt and uncle back in 1956. For the כתובה, he used a form that had his photo at the top (see ). He also signed as one of the עדי כתובה at the bottom (see here ).

When Rabbi Mnachem passed away in 1960, דאס אידישע ווארט mentioned Rabbi Leon in a ניחום אבלים section (he is listed 7th over here ).

I found his headstone on Find a grave:

He was martied to a daughter if Rav Sholom Elchanan Jaffe, it apears from the newspaper reports at the time that the couple seperated and perhaps later divorced, and he never remaried.

Here is an account for the wedding of a daughter of Reb Menachem Risikoff in 1928, the bride’s name is gaven is Rabbi Simches from Bridgeport:

    Any idea who that was?

  • 14 Moshe Escott // Apr 5, 2016 at 4:37 pm

re: R. Leon Risikoff – Thanks for the link to the findagrave link! You beat me to the punch 🙂
correct re: Rav Jaffe’s daughter but he did remarry.

re: R. Herbert I. Simckes (AKA Chaim Yitzchak)
He was originally a rabbi in Bradford, PA and not Bridgeport, CT (in Yiddish they can come out similar) – this is evident from other times he is mentioned in Degel Yisroel and elsewhere. He later served as Rabbi of Hadrath Israel in the Mattapan/Dorchester area of Boston.

Here it indicates that his kever is in Sharon, MA:

There’s a picture of him to the right over here:

He is mentioned in his father in law’s Sefer Toras Kohanim ( ) here:

hi, My name is Elana Schapiro kastner and I am sitting here on motsei shabbat with my cousin Ari Menchem Simckes. We are the great grandchildren of Rav Menachem Risicoff, and the grandchildren of Fayette Rachel Resnicoff (Risicoff), daughter of Menachem Mendel, who married Rabbi Herbert I Simckes. We spent Shabbos learning from one of our Great Grandfather’s Sefarim “Shaari Ratzon with our spouses and our children, and it was a special moment to share words of Torah written generations ago with out family. If you wanted to connect, please email me back.
