The full Hebrew name is שלמה זלמן בן יוסף
The Hebrew date looks rather like כ”ז ניסן תרע”ה or תרע”ח definitely not תרע”ז which is what the english 1917 translates to, but April 19 1917 was indeed כ”ז ניסן So I guess the engraver made a mistake
Rabbi
Solomon Cohen
Died April 19 1917
Aged 67 Years
May his soul rest in peace
Also I believe the credit to the photo is miss-typed, and should instead read: Jewish “Morgen”, or “Morning” (as its Yiddish & English names, respectively)
This may be my great great grandfather. Can you translate the grave stone to English?
Do you know anything about this man?
My cousin Miriam Burton submitted a possible family link, Rabbi Solomon Zalman Cohen may be my great grandfather through son Morris and daughter-in-law Ruth Leah (Lena) Miller who were married in 1901 in NYC. I was always told my great grandfather was a respected rabbi/leader in NYC and one of the founders of a large synagogue in NYC. I’m currently working with Ancestry.com on building the family tree…Cohen/Singer Family Tree. The dates on the tombstone seem to jibe. Also, the NYC historical census information seems to make sense, although no reference to being a rabbi…many also had parallel occupations. Any help from your organization would be helpful. On grandfather Morris’ tombstone in Tifereth Israel Cemetery Duluth,Arnold Township, Minnesota it states…Moshe ben Rov Shlomo Tzve….
