Like her mother, she was well known for her philanthropic work. Sadly they never had children.

Has anyone ever connected the General Slocum fire and the R. Hoe and Co riots at the Chief Rabbi?s funeral?
The Readers Digest made the connection in an article published in c.1930.
R. Hoe and Co:
As funeral procession following the Chief Rabbi’s bier past the printing plant of R. Hoe and Co. the mostly German workforce angrily hurled stones, hot oil, metal pipes, and garbage at the passing procession below. As the ensuing riot unfolded an anti-Semitic police force of over 200 took to clubbing the attacked rather that the attackers. When the dust settled it found scores of mourners hospitalized or incarcerated while the R. Hoe and Co. received a slap on the wrist. The attack led to what was considered the largest “cleaning of house” for the New York City Police Department initiated by then New York City Mayor Seth Low.
General Slocum Steamboat Fire:
On June 15, 1904 more than 1,300 members of New York City”s Kleindeutschland (little Germany), which included the majority of the R. Hoe and Co. workforce, boarded the General Slocum steamboat to spend the day at Locust Grove on Long Island Sound. As the steamboat passed East 90th street on the East River it became engulfed into a ball of fire. More that 1,020 people died by the time the boat finally docked. Due to the tragedy within the next few years the entire neighborhood collapsed.
We report you decide!!!!!!
Read The Tragedy of the Steamboat General Slocum by Professor Edward T. O’Donnell as well as his article on the RJJ funeral, I think the connection is pretty clear cut.
The Al-mighty never leaves a debt unpaid!!!!!!!
I am looking into the extended members of RJJ’s family, I know he had a brother Yehuda Leib (listed on this site) and Chaim. There may have been a sister Chaya as well. Does anyone know of other sibling? I am also looking for information on Chaim, any tidbit would be appreciated.
S Jacobson:
In response to your request, I have recently learnt of another sibling, Shmuel Moshe who lived in a suburb of Kovno, Lithuania. His daughter Sara, an only child immigrated to New York in 1888 and lived with her uncle who had recently become the city’s Chief Rabbi. After marring Avroham Philips in 1891, the young couple moved to Bethlehem, PA where Avroham operated a retail clothing store. Sometime prior to the turn of the Century the Chief Rabbi made a trip out to Bethlehem to visit his endeared niece. In 2010, with modern modes of transpiration Bethlehem is about 2 hours from New York City. One can only imagine that it was a bit longer back in the 1890’s.
With gratitude to Mr. Ira Berman for providing the above information.
Slocum fire was June 15, 1904, not 2004.

Does anyone know wether his name was really – יעקב יאסעף or יעקב יוסף יאסעף. I took it for granted the way it’s inscribed on the Matzeivoh, but now that I looked into his sefer (there’s a bio and collection of letter etc), his signature does not appear to be consistent. To list just a few, kindly see below.
1. In the Shaar Blaat of his sefer (printed in Vilna), he signs off as:

Hope someone here can get to the bottom of this.

Where besides the stone enclosure is the original matseva?
Is this a word for word transcription? Is it made up, new?
There’s no question there was an original stone. Where was it removed to? Why? By whom?
Why do you say that it’s a new stone? I believe its just freshly painted.
Ask Rabbi Marvin Shick he may know as he was there as a little boy over 70 years ago.
On Torahanytime – on the 22.09. Reb Doniel Glatstein talks about יעקב יוסף ב”ר דוב
I recently uncovered through Ancestry. Com that Rabbi Jacob Joseph is my 3xs Great Grand Uncle.
