How was the Rebbe a descendant of the Baal-Shem-Tov (as stated on the Matzieve)?

The Rabbi in YI of West-Heampstead is named Rabbbi Yehuda Kelemer, is he a dscendant of this Rabbi?

  • 2 Grand Rebbe // Mar 9, 2009 at 10:02 pm

    Yes, its his son.

  • 3 FYI // Mar 9, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Rabbi Yisroel Goodman (the kever is posted on the sight) was his FIL, his tombstone has some more information.

  • 4 Miller // Mar 10, 2009 at 1:51 am

From what I researched it sounds like a grandson.

  • 5 Grand Rebbe // Mar 10, 2009 at 2:49 am

I am confused who is a grandson of whom?
    The order is:
    Rav Goodman
    Rav Yosef Kelemer
    Rav Yehuda Kelemer

I taught thad Reb Yehuda is a grandson of Reb Yossef, via a son Reb Berl.

BTW I would like to know the lineage to the Baal Shem, besides from his FIL

I once had a friend (who davens in his shule) asked him and he said that Rav Yosef was his father.
As for the lineage, not sure, the Rav has yet to answer any of the emails I?ve sent him. I do know that he has a large congregation and its hard to pin him down.
    Thank you,

    Thank you,

What else can you tell us about your grandfather?

Do you know the lineage to the Baal Shem?

  • 12 grandson // Mar 16, 2009 at 1:12 am

the lineage is on kevir of my greatgrandfather,, rabbi israel guttman, for whom i am named.

  • 13 Miller // Mar 16, 2009 at 3:31 pm

I wouldn’t think that someone would consider himself a descendant of the Baal-Shem bacause of his Father-in-law.

It seems that there is a direct cennection from Rabbi Kelemer alone, do you know who his maternal grandfather was?

  • 14 chernobyl // Mar 16, 2009 at 4:03 pm

There’s a very nice discussion about Rabbi Kelemer and his father in law Rabbi Yisroel Guttman, there’s also his lineage to the Baal Shem Tov. It’s in Yiddish.

My grandmother was a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov, her mother was Kelemer (or Chelmer or Khelmer) חלמר
from Lubartov. Is there any connection?

  • 16 Nechunya // Jun 19, 2013 at 1:28 pm

what any other information do you know about her relationship to the Baal Shem tov? maybe its from her father’s side? what was his name?

  • 17 Sophie // Dec 13, 2013 at 6:56 pm

The name of her father was Avraham Mandel (Mendel?)

  • 18 Nechunya // Dec 22, 2013 at 3:15 pm

Mandel is the family name of the Rebbe’s of Orzistchov.

  • 19 Sophie // Aug 7, 2014 at 5:09 pm

Could be from the family name Shapiro (Shapira) from Midzhibuz and later Solobkovci (Ukraine) or from the family name Chelmer (Khelmer?) from Lubartov?

  • 20 Sophie // Aug 7, 2014 at 5:23 pm

    Solobkivtsi, Oblast Chmelnytsky, Ukraine
    Medzhybizh, Oblast Chmelnytsky, Ukraine
    Lubartów, Polen

You are a grandchild not only of the Baal Shem Tov but also of many other of his greatest disciples.

It’s also interesting to note that your family is interconnected with a few other Rabbis who were in New York

    Your GGF:

Your great uncle Rav Shulem Bush/Buskis, who’s burial records will hopefully be posted shortly.

There’s also some family relation to Rav Barash who’s son also married to your Great aunt Mirel Kelemer,

The Kobriner Rebbe was also somewhat related

  • 27 Gildin Mark // Feb 3, 2016 at 9:01 am

my mother was Udl Kelemer(Rosen) from Kupel. The family legend says she was a descendant of Baal-Shemtov. How could this relation be?

  • 28 Nechunya // Feb 7, 2016 at 5:23 pm

Does anyone have a nice picture from Rabbi Kelemer?

  • 29 Paul Rosen // Apr 3, 2016 at 6:35 pm

Mark Gildin – My Rosen family is from Kupel also. I have heard the same legend. It would be of great interest if we could see a family tree of the Baal Shem Tov. Does this exist?
