How come the name does not say Shneerson on the Kever? The Rebbes shul i think was on Kingston avenue and Eastern Parkway on the opposite side of Kingston as 770 according to my Great Uncle who had his bar Mitzvah there
The Rebbe went with the surname of Schneerson – Twersky as is evident from his stationary and his Shule was on 922 Eastern Parkway. Interestingly, his grandmother was Rebbetzin Sara Freda Schneerson, the daughter of Rebbe Yaakov Yisroel Twersky, the Rebbe of Cherkass. The Cherkasser was a grandson of the Chernobyler Maggid. I think the Rebbe?s real last name was Auerbach, but I?m not sure. Its very common for Admorim not to have their surname listed on the tombstone.
who’s real name was “Auerbach”?
The Tamoshpol-koidanover Rebbe was Schneerson as he was a direct Ben-acher-ben from the Ball Hatanya, his father R’ Mordechai Duber was the son of R’ Nachum the son of the Miteler Rebbe.
Sorry, you are correct his real last name was Schneerson, his father added the name Twersky because he was also a Cherkasser eynikel (grandson).
It is reported that the Lubavitcher Rebbe followed his bier for many blocks, something he rarely did.
According to the Sefer Hachassidut Mdor Ldor, The Rebbe was Ben Acher Ben from the Alter Rebbe as J. Hirsch said. His father took the name Twersky as Baruch said because his fathers mother was from Cherkassy.
The Rebbe could be the closest relative of the Bardichever buried in the United States.
His father Reb Mordchei Dov of Tomashpyl was raised by his grandfather Reb Yakov Yisroel of Cherkassy, so he named himself Twersky [as you could see on his letterheads]. When his son Reb Chaim Moishe Yehoshu came to america, he started calling himself Schnierson-Twersky.
THANKS FOR THE INFO
HIS DUAGHTER IS STILL ALIVE
REBBETZIN PUPKA IN FLATBUSH
SHES BLY AYIN HARA 100 YRS OLD
SHE IS PROBABLY TH CLOSEST GRANDCHILD O THE BAAL HATANYA
Baruch,
Reb Motele Hornostipeler who was also a grand-son of the Cherkasser his original name was Auerbach and changed to Twersky, that is probably where your confusion came.
To Baruch A: The cherkasser Rebbi, Rebbi Yaakov Yisrael Twerski, was a son, not grandson, of Rebbi Mmoredchai the Charnobyer Maggid.
GE:
Correct, he was grandson of Rebbe Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl.
On a side note, welcome to the site.
Thank you,
Miller: FYI the descendants in Aurbach-Twerski family do not spell their name “Twersky.” The name “Twerski” with an “i” indicates that their original name was Auerbach.
You probably understand that they didn’t adopt their name Twerski in America… it’s just a matter of spelling with no indication, it surely depends how the immigration officer spelled the name while entering the USA.
I think it has to do with Poland vs. Russia
Poland …ski
Russia …sky
The Milwaukee Twerskis lived in Poland after he married the Bobover Rebbe’s daughter
There is also a Tversky (with a V), who lives in Flatbush, I can’t imagine that the spelling has to do with the country of origin.
chernobyl:
I did some checking. Not all Auerbach/Twerskys spell their names with an “i.” The change to the “i” spelling was made by the Hornesteipler, R’ Yaakov Yisroel, before he emigrated to America while he was still living in Galicia and that spelling is used only by his descendants (the Milwaukee clan).
How is the Rebbe a descendant of the Berdichever. What was his mothers maiden name?

I am a descendent of the Twersky family. My great great gandfather was named Yeshia (sp?) Twersky who emigrated to New York. I have pictures of him and other Twersky relatives and am trying to identify them. I have posted some on my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/profile.php?id=100001151166013&v=photos
If anyone recognizes anyone in the album, please contact me.

Do you have any information about his son Levi Yitzchok? Do we know when he was niftar and where he is buried? Did he pre-decease his father?
