This is a mistake, the picture is of the mother of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, wife of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak
I have got news for anyone wondering about the alleged picture of the Rebbe of Lubavitch.
I am assuming that people believe that the Kremlin convents and certain of its towers are in the background. However, when analyzing the tower on the right side it does not match any towers on the Kremlin compound that I know of. So I am assuming that the scene in the background is a prop. Which makes sense, because if not you would need to assume that this Russian photography outfit dragged themselves down to the Kremlin with this person to take pictures of him! Alternatively, maybe they set up shop there, who knows.
Additionally, when comparing the width of the forehead of this person to the only know picture of the rebbe, (Me not being a face expert) it totally does not match!
It’s a background photo. In addition, it may or may not be the Rebbe Rashab. Hard to decide.
I am convinced that it’s a picture of the Rebbe Rashab. I photoshopped the hat from the other verified picture, onto this, and compared them side by side. The nose, the ears, and the beard are identical, and the mouth matches but harder to tell. The only difference is the eyes but firstly, the eyes themselves are fine, it’s the surrounding features. This could be explained easily by lighting, and age difference (they are 12 years apart).
Yes it’s a prop background that makes perfect sense for the time, totally normal due to how rare cameras were. The only real question is – the Rebbe Rashab was known for resisting having photos taken, but here he seems to be posing. Perhaps he was just making it for his family, or for an official document (like the other photo).
I showed the side by side to an artist friend of mine who has a good eye, and he’s convinced. I showed it to my wife and she’s convinced. Then, even though nobody asked him, when I happened to have this picture on the screen my 3 year old just walked into the room and said “that’s the Rebbe Rashab!”, and children under the age of 5 have much better facial recognition ability. So, with all that, I am 99.999% convinced this is the Rebbe!
