Holocaust - Shoah Kedoshim, Chelmno Extermination Camp - Chełmno nad Nerem, Poland

קבר הקדושים ממחנת ההשמדה חלמנה-במאנסי

Date of Death: Wed. January 17, 1945 - Nissan 3 5705

At the very minimum, 152,000 people were murdered at Chelmno, HY”D, which would make it the fifth most deadly extermination camp, after Sobibor, Belzec, Treblinka, and Auschwitz. The Red Army captured the town of Chełmno on January 17, 1945. By then, the Germans Y”S had already destroyed evidence of the camp’s existence, leaving no prisoners behind. One of the camp survivors, who was fifteen years old at the time, testified that only three Jewish males had escaped successfully.
How the remains arrived in Monsey, New York is unclear. Recently a new marker was erected in honor of those buried there.

Of Note:
In September of 1928, just two days before Yom Kippur,  a blood libel was launched against the Jews of Massena. After only being missing for less than a day, the small Jewish community was accused of killing Babara Griffiths, a local four-year-old. It’s was claimed that they needed her blood for the upcoming Yom Kippur service. Rabbi Brennglass did everything in his power to protect his congregants as well as fight off the accusations. Griffiths was later found wandering lost in woods.

Bio Information:
In the 1890’s, Aron Streit and his wife, Nettie, left Europe and came to America. In 1916, Aron opened his first matzo factory. There, on Pitt Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Aron and his first partner Rabbi Moshe Weinberger made all their matzo by hand. In 1925, Aron and one of his sons opened up a modern bakery on Rivington Street. A few years later, Aron’s other son joined the business. With the family working together, the Streit matzo bakery prospered and Aron bought three adjoining buildings to handle the growing business. In 2015, after nearly 100 years making matzo on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Streit’s moved to a new and modern bakery in Orangeburg, New York.
